The investigation began in December 2020 following an allegation of rape by a teenage girl. During inquiries, indecent images, including some taken by hidden cameras, and evidence of searches for child pornography sites were found on Mawdsley's phone. Richard Mawdsley (Chelmsford, sentenced in 2015):

In December 2015, a Richard Mawdsley was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court to a five-year prison term for the sexual abuse of a five-year-old girl. He was convicted of encouraging a child under 13 to participate in sexual activities without penetration. He was also ordered to be registered as a sex offender for life and received an indefinite sexual offenses prevention order, restricting him from being in the company of females under 16 without appropriate supervision.

Richard Mawdsley (Bury, driving offense in 2019):

In July 2019, a Richard Mawdsley, aged 33, of Beech Grove Close, Bury, was fined £660 by Manchester magistrates. This was for driving a Mitsubishi Lancer on Tottington Road, Bury, in March 2017 without insurance. He was also ordered to pay £151 in costs and charges.
