Mario Rea
Case Information & Details
Mario Rea, a former boxing promoter in the UK, has been involved in several significant criminal and legal proceedings.
Recent Conviction and Sentencing (June 2026):
Mario Rea was sentenced to six years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow. He pleaded guilty to two charges of involvement in serious organized crime and an offense under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Rea, aged 47, acted as a "trusted lieutenant" for Robert "Birdman" O'Hara, a gangland killer who directed a crime operation from prison. Rea's role included managing criminal finances, arranging luxury homes for O'Hara's family, and handling approximately £80,000 in criminal money through his bank account. He was also linked to extensive drug trafficking, involving over £2 million worth of cocaine, heroin, and cannabis, uncovered through police investigations known as Operation Gadget and Operation Dorrigo. The gang was apprehended following a large-scale police probe in 2021.
Previous Criminal Charges and Proceedings:
- Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering (2008-2012): In 2008, Mario Rea and his twin brother, Carlo, were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and money laundering offenses as part of a Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) investigation. However, these charges were dropped in March 2012 due to insufficient evidence.
- Assault Convictions (2013): Mario Rea and Carlo Rea were convicted of assaulting members of the Lyons crime clan. In August 2011, they were found guilty of a street attack on Eddie Lyons Jr, resulting in 18-month restriction of liberty orders and 200 hours of community service. In August 2012, Mario Rea admitted to assaulting Liam Boyle at a cinema, with the charge amended from using a knife to using a key.
Other Legal Matters:
- Company Directorship Ban (2012): In July 2012, Mario Rea received a seven-year ban from serving as a company director. This ban was imposed because he failed to account for over £1.3 million that passed through the accounts of a property development company he co-ran with his brother. The ban was in effect until December 26, 2018.
- Civil Case (May 2026): A civil case, "BANK OF SCOTLAND PLC v MARIO REA," was scheduled for a procedural hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on May 21, 2026.
- Criminal Hearing (May 2026): A criminal case, "HMA v Mario REA," had a Fixed Trial Diet scheduled at the High Court in Glasgow on May 20, 2026.
