Cameron Cheng, a 19-year-old British national from Newbridge, Gwent, has been charged in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Lainie Williams and the attempted murder of her mother, Rhian Stephens, in Cefn Fforest, South Wales. He is also charged with possession of a bladed article.
The incident occurred on November 13, 2025, when police responded to reports of two people with serious injuries at a property in Wheatley Place, Cefn Fforest. Lainie Williams was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple knife injuries, while her mother, Rhian Stephens, was injured and later discharged from the hospital.
Cheng, who was 18 at the time of the initial charges, appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court on November 17, 2025, where he confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. The case was then sent to Cardiff Crown Court.
A provisional trial date was initially set for May 11, 2026, with an estimated duration of two to three weeks. However, this trial date was adjourned for legal reasons during a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on April 24, 2026. A new mention hearing was scheduled for May 22, 2026. Cheng has been remanded in custody since his initial court appearance. The Gwent Coroner's Court inquest into Lainie Williams' death has been adjourned until August 2026, pending the criminal proceedings.
